Here in Brazil a funny thing happened:

Our hierarchy here is contaminated by the heresy called "Liberation Theology" (LT to make it short), that could be explained as a kind of marxism disguised with Christian vocabulary, so that "liberation" means the end of plus-malue, "kingdom of god" means socialism, "prophet" means agitprop, and so on.

We don't have the "newage" heresy in the hierarchy here (so we don't have wicca, we don't have feminazi nuns, etc).

When the first "charismatics" arived, the hierarchy decided to fight them with the weapons Rome used to fight the LT: an obligation to study the Doctrine of the Church, prohibition of protestant practices (like laypeople laying hands, speaking in tongues, etc), enforcement of an orthodox vocabulary (like the baptism/outpouring question already mentioned), etc.

What happened?

The Brazilian "charismatic renewal" became almost orthodox, and having had their errors controlled by the hierarchy, they are the ones who are fighting (and winning the fight!!!) against LT. The charismatics (that don't have much to do with their American counterparts - a young "charismatic" told me once that he got into an American "Catholic charismatic" list and left in horror less than two days later; it wasn't Catholic at all, he said) are the ones who are instituting Perpetual Adoration in many parishes, who are praying the Rosary everyday, who are confronting bad bishops and bad priests, who are preaching about the value of chastity, who are, in fact, helping the Church back into the tracks.

One other thing that perhaps helped it is the fact that African sorcery is very common in Brazil, and everybody here knows that a quick way to be possessed by the devil is trying to babble in "tongues" while other people lay their hands upon you. My pastor is a convert from African sorcery, and when the first "charismatics' arrived here he said: "I'll keep an eye on you; I know very well how this hand-laying stuff happens, and I won't allow it here!" - and he is not at all an exception.

They still have many problems, that are beginning to be dealt with: they usually have an awful liturgy (the Cardinal of Rio punished three "charismatic" priests a week ago because of some abuses they were commiting, and most of the "charismatics" I know supported him), they tend to pray in a protestant style (that is, "multiplying their words", as Our Lord told us ***not*** to do; here in Brazil there are two verbs that can be translated as "to pray"- "orar" and "rezar"; Prots usually say we must "orar", nor "rezar", that is, in their sense, invent new prayers every time we pray, instead of praying like the Church teaches us to pray), what makes a frightening sound: many people mumbling (in Portuguese, not in "tongues"): "Lord, please help us, Lord, help this brother, Lord, you are good, Lord, it's so good to be here, Lord, make us saints", etc., all speaking at once. The sound of it is an infernal cacophony. :(

But in a country where there are no Indult Masses, where the Tridentine Mass cannot be found (except for Campos, an SSPX stronghold), the "charismatics" are the ones who are pushing for Latin, who want to have a liturgy that is obviously sacred, etc.

Our "charismatics" (that, I repeat, have nothing to do with the American ones) are in the good side of the fight here. hen we finally have the Tridentine Mass back, I am most certain most of them will be there in the front row.
